Billy Corgan, Billy Crudup, and the Hives come to this rock-star hangout for the huge selection of discount vintage and used guitars (e.g., an original, TV Yellow Les Paul circa 1957, or a 1954 0-18 Martin). But owner Dan Courtenay is also known for nurturing beginners, selling starter kits with an electric or acoustic guitar, bag, pitch pipe, and other goodies.

"The last little hole in the wall guitar store in New York City."
That's how the folks at Chelsea Guitars describe the shop which offers a wide assortment of Gretsch, Gibson, Guild and Fender guitars. While most guitars, electric and acoustic, are secondhand, there are few new instruments for sale as well. They'll also help you fix and tune your guitar and find you a teacher, if that's what you need. Aside from guitars, the shop also has a wonderful selection of old microphones from the 1930s that they rent out to musicians and for use as props in movies.

Although small (and more than a tad dusty), this eclectic shop has a good selection of both new and vintage guitars and amps. It's a good place to browse, as the friendly guys behind the counter aren't going to pressure you. If you're buying, there seems to be some negotiation room. Even if you just stroll by, don't miss the "rare birds" in the front window.
